Marine Cargo

Marine Cargo insurance protects the financial interest in goods while they are in transit — by sea, air, road or rail — and while in storage at intermediate points along the journey. A single shipment can represent a substantial concentration of value, and exposures range from physical loss and damage to general average contributions, war and strikes risks, and accumulation at ports and warehouses. We place cargo risks into Lloyd’s and the London Market on behalf of retail brokers and MGAs, structuring submissions that give underwriters a clear picture of the trade, the commodities and the transit patterns involved.

Our appetite is broad and international, spanning general merchandise, project and breakbulk cargo, commodities, and stock throughput programmes, subject to underwriting. Where a risk fits a delegated facility we can often respond quickly; where it does not, we build a tailored open market submission.

What Marine Cargo covers

Transit — All Risks

Physical loss of or damage to insured goods during the ordinary course of transit, on Institute Cargo Clauses (A), (B) or (C) as appropriate to the commodity and voyage.

Storage & Stock Throughput

Cover for goods held at named locations and throughout the supply chain, bridging transit and static storage under a single programme where required.

War & Strikes

Cover for war, strikes, riots and civil commotion risks in transit, arranged in line with the relevant Institute War and Strikes Clauses.

General Average & Salvage

The insured’s liability to contribute in general average and salvage charges following a maritime incident affecting the carrying vessel.

Project & Breakbulk

Single-shipment and project cover for oversized, high-value or complex consignments, including delay in start-up considerations where the market supports it.

Accumulation & Concentration

Structuring cover around known accumulations at ports, terminals and warehouses so that limits and sub-limits reflect the real pattern of exposure.

Who it’s for

Importers, exporters, freight forwarders, traders and manufacturers with international supply chains — placed through their retail broker or MGA. We work particularly closely with brokers seeking London Market capacity for risks that are difficult to place domestically, or that need war, strikes or accumulation solutions.

Why place Marine Cargo through Bissell & Partners

As a wholesale broker with direct access to Lloyd’s and the London Market, we bring cargo risks to underwriters who understand international trade. Where a risk fits our Hull & Machinery Facility (up to USD 3m) or a companion marine facility we can often respond quickly; broader or more complex cargo programmes are placed on the open market. All facilities are Lloyd’s-backed and every placement is subject to underwriting.
