Environmental

Environmental insurance protects businesses against the cost of pollution and contamination — clean-up, third-party bodily injury and property damage, and business interruption — that standard liability policies typically exclude. It covers both the exposures that arise from owning or operating a site and those that arise from carrying out work at someone else’s. We place environmental risks into Lloyd’s and the London Market on behalf of retail brokers and MGAs.

Environmental Impairment Liability (EIL) and Contractors’ Pollution Liability (CPL) are closely related but address different situations: EIL responds to pollution originating from an owned or operated site, while CPL responds to pollution caused by contracting operations away from the insured’s own premises. Many businesses need both, and we can structure them together or separately. Our appetite is broad across property owners, manufacturers, waste and recycling, and the construction sector, subject to underwriting.

What Environmental insurance covers

Environmental Impairment Liability (EIL)

Site-based cover for gradual and sudden pollution originating from owned or operated locations, including on-site clean-up, third-party claims and business interruption.

Contractors’ Pollution Liability (CPL)

Cover for pollution conditions arising from contracting operations performed at a third party’s site, protecting contractors against liabilities their general liability policy excludes.

Clean-up & Remediation

The cost of investigating and remediating contamination, whether on the insured’s own land or at a third-party location, in line with regulatory requirements.

Third-Party Injury & Damage

Legal liability for bodily injury and property damage suffered by third parties as a result of a pollution condition.

Transported Cargo & Waste

Pollution exposures arising from the transport and disposal of goods, materials and waste, including loading and unloading operations.

Business Interruption

Loss of income and additional expense following a covered pollution event that interrupts the insured’s operations.

Who it’s for

Property owners and developers, manufacturers, waste and recycling operators, energy and utilities businesses, and contractors of all kinds — placed through their retail broker or MGA. We help brokers place environmental risks that domestic markets find difficult, and combine site and operational cover where a client needs both.

Why place Environmental through Bissell & Partners

As a wholesale broker with direct access to Lloyd’s and the London Market, we bring environmental risks to underwriters who understand pollution exposures and the interaction between EIL and CPL. We help brokers structure cover so there are no gaps between site and operational liabilities. Every placement is subject to underwriting.
